Helping Columbus Jazz Harmonize History, Education, and the Future

August 24, 2026

For more than half a century, jazz has been the heartbeat of Central Ohio’s cultural scene. As the nation’s oldest nonprofit dedicated to producing, performing, and educating in jazz, Columbus Jazz (formerly Jazz Arts Group) has built an extraordinary legacy—from high-energy performances by the Columbus Jazz Orchestra at the Southern Theatre to life-changing programs at the Jazz Academy.

When the leadership team at Columbus Jazz approached Origo for a complete brand overhaul, we were thrilled. As passionate champions for the arts, our team saw a remarkable opportunity: How do you take a 50-year legacy and reimagine it for the next generation of listeners, patrons, and young musicians?

Here is a look behind the scenes at how we transformed the Columbus Jazz brand strategy, web experience, and visual identity.

The Challenge: A Disconnected Narrative & Fragmented Brand

As Columbus Jazz expanded its footprint over the decades, its brand portfolio grew increasingly complex. While the organization had immense reverence in the community, its identity faced three main friction points:

  • Brand Confusion: The umbrella name Jazz Arts Group felt distant from its famous performance series, causing audiences to miss the connection between the parent organization and its shows.
  • Hidden Educational Impact: While their youth programs and summer camps were thriving, the existing brand wasn’t effectively telling the story of education as the core engine of their mission.
  • Digital & Visual Constraints: A dated visual system made modern marketing difficult, and a cluttered 60+ page website was frustrating for patrons looking to buy tickets or enroll students.

To set the stage for sustainable growth, Columbus Jazz needed a unified identity that honored its history while creating a modern, patron-first experience.

The Breakthrough: Listening to the Community

In true jazz fashion, our discovery process relied on radical collaboration and intense listening. We held strategic sessions with musicians, board members, donors, and community members to uncover what truly mattered.

Three core insights emerged to guide our creative vision:

  1. Rooting the Identity in Place: By simplifying the master brand from Jazz Arts Group to Columbus Jazz, we instantly created a warm, direct connection between the institution and the city it serves.
  2. Elevating Education to Center Stage: Education isn’t just an add-on; it’s how we nurture tomorrow’s artists. The new brand strategy explicitly positions Columbus Jazz as the gold standard for jazz education in the region.
  3. Capturing Kinetic Energy: Jazz is alive, spontaneous, and inclusive. The visual and verbal identity needed to reflect that high-energy movement across every touchpoint.

Transforming the Digital Stage: columbusjazz.org

A brand refresh is only as strong as its digital home. We overhauled the organization’s website, moving away from a cluttered web footprint to build an immersive digital experience at columbusjazz.org.

Web Experience Highlights:

Immersive Storytelling: Integrated bold performance photography, video highlights, and artist spotlights that capture the magic of a live show right from the browser.

Intuitive Navigation: Streamlined content so patrons can discover upcoming shows and purchase tickets in just a few clicks.

Dedicated Educational Hub: Built a central space where parents, educators, and young musicians can easily explore the Columbus Youth Jazz Program, summer camps, and free ticketing programs.

The Result: Set Up for the Next 50 Years

Rolled out ahead of the FY26 season, the new Columbus Jazz brand bridges generations. It honors a rich artistic legacy while giving the internal team the digital and visual tools they need to inspire new audiences, train young artists, and keep jazz vibrant in Central Ohio for decades to come.
